WIN Network Detroit

Three Detroit neighborhoods collaborate to raise awareness
about reducing the high rate of infant mortality.

WIN Network: Detroit partnered with Project S.N.A.P in an initiative to raise awareness about ensuring that all babies reach their first birthday.  The unifying theme combined the concepts of hope, courage, strength and wisdom as expressed in thousands of artworks and artist statements created by people living in three neighborhoods served by WIN Network: Detroit, Osborn, Chadsey-Condon, and Brightmoor.

The program culminated in three inspiring 5′ x 9′ community mosaic murals featuring the individual artworks created by members of the community.  Each of the mosaic murals titled “Expecting” is on permanent display in a prominent location in each of the neighborhoods.  The mosaic murals promote community pride and collective ownership in helping to reduce the infant mortality rate in the community.

Participants can access the mosaic mural online in the Project S.N.A.P. Online Art Museum, read and share their artist’s statement and see how their artwork fits into the “big picture”.   The mosaic mural is also on display as part of the  “Featured Programs” in the Project S.N.A.P. Online Art Museum.

I walked around the tables and I saw the women... all of them had a vision that the life that they were living now does not have to be the life they live tomorrow. And when they drew their artworks, they said, 'I've got one more day to make my life different'.

The WIN Network:  Detroit and Project S.N.A.P. initiative was supported by a coalition of community partners including Henry Ford Health System, Oakwood Health Care, St. John Providence Health System, Detroit Medical Center, PNC Bank, and W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
