Brightmoor Celebrating Early Childhood Education

Nearly 1,000 children and families from the Brightmoor community in Detroit mobilized around the importance of early childhood education and school-readiness through the Brightmoor Community Mosaic Mural Program. This year-long initiative was led through a collaborative effort between Project S.N.A.P., community-based organizational partners (the Development Centers, Rising Advocates for Young Children, Brightmoor Childcare Quality Initiative and the Brightmoor Alliance) with the generous support of the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation.  The result was a 5’ x 9’ mosaic mural including artworks created by community members of all ages about how early children education could benefit their lives and those of their children.

Participants were also invited to write an Artist’s Statement that further reflected their thoughts about the impact that strong early childhood education can have on the community.  Celebrating early childhood education means playing active roles as parents, caregivers, and educators to send  children into a world of exploration and learning that will last a lifetime.

I want to grow up and read to my children, so that they can be like me and love reading, education, and school. Early Childhood Education should start at home first.

Participants can access the mosaic mural online in the project S.N.A.P. Online Art Museum, read and share their artist’s statement, and see how their artwork fits into the “big picture”. The mosaic mural is also on display in the “Featured Programs” in the Project S.N.A.P. Online Art Museum.
