Action for Earth: Clean Water, Healthy Families

As part of a five city initiative funded by the Erb Family Foundation, the Dearborn Heights Library and the Carolyn Kennedy Library partnered with Project S.N.A.P. and the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum to provide students and families in the community with the opportunity to learn about water as a resource and how to keep it clean.  The program was led by the Libraries along with a coalition of municipal,  business, environmental and educational leaders in the city of Dearborn Heights.  Students and their families participated in a series of educational programs at the library conducted by the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum.  In a separate program, families in the program and library patrons were invited to create artworks about the importance of preserving water, the earth and its resources.

Two culminating events were held with strong participation from the community.

• Mosaic Mural – A 4’x6′ mosaic mural was created and put on permanent display at the Dearborn Heights Library with a smaller reproduction installed at the Carolyn Kennedy Library.
• River Cleanup – Participants in the program and the general community joined together to conduct a much needed river cleanup to put into action what they learned throughout the program.

The community rallied around the Libraries and committed themselves to finding solutions  to local environmental challenges.

The mosaic mural was made by the community, for the community.
